The Gee Bee #11 Speedster furious 750 HP. 280 mph laps around a home pylon and then down the 10-mile course. Roscoe Turner, Jimmy Wedell, legendary and fearless racing aces. An endearing shape, somehow cartoon-like. Competing for Schneider, Thompson and Bendix trophies of the 1930s. This airplane was custom built in 1931 specifically as a racer. This airplane was basically a huge engine with a stick and a seat behind it. The Gee Bee was made by the Granville Bros in Springfield, Mass. It won every race it ever flew in. However after some refinements the plane crashed in a speed record attempt, killing it's pilot. It soon became know as the "widow maker". The Gee Bee sported a 535 horse power Pratt & Whitney engine and was capable of speeds of 260+ mph. It had a wingspan of just over 23 feet.
